The most consequential change to Google in years was not an algorithm update in the usual sense. It was the arrival of a generated answer above everything else, drawing on sources chosen for usefulness rather than rank — and forum threads turned out to be extremely useful.
What actually happened
Two shifts landed close together. Google began surfacing forum and discussion content much more prominently for subjective queries, a change widely noticed by anyone who watched "best X" results fill with Reddit threads. Separately, AI Overviews began composing a summary answer above the organic results, citing a small set of sources.
Together they compressed the value of position. A page ranking third now sits below a generated answer that may have already resolved the user's question, and the sources feeding that answer are chosen on different criteria than the ranking beneath it.
Why forums won
Because the commercial web had become very good at ranking and very bad at being trusted. A query like "best project management tool for a small agency" returned page after page of affiliate roundups with near-identical recommendations. Users started appending "reddit" to their searches in large enough numbers that it became a visible behavioural pattern — and Google responded to the demand it was seeing.
Forum content offers what those roundups could not: identifiable people describing specific experiences, with community voting as a crude but real quality signal.
The consequences for brands
Informational content lost value. Top-of-funnel explainers that used to earn traffic are now frequently summarized in the Overview with no click.
Comparison and decision content gained value — but only the honest kind. Pages that read as genuine evaluation get cited; pages that read as promotion get skipped in favour of a thread.
Off-domain presence became a ranking factor in effect, if not in name. If the Overview for your category's main buying question is sourced from a Reddit thread, your visibility for that query depends on whether you are in the thread.
What to do about it
Audit your queries. For your top twenty commercial queries, check what the Overview says and which sources it cites. This takes an afternoon and usually produces an uncomfortable but clarifying picture.
Shift content toward decisions. Depth on narrow decision questions — specific use case, specific constraint, specific comparison — survives summarization better than broad explainers, because there is less to summarize away.
Participate in the sourced threads. Where a community thread is feeding the Overview, the only route in is to be a credible voice in that community, contributing early and honestly when the questions arise.
Stop measuring purely in sessions. If your category's answers increasingly happen above the fold, brand mention rate inside those answers matters as much as click-through.
Where this goes
The direction of travel is consistent across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest: the answer moves closer to the query, and the citation replaces the click. Betting on a reversal seems unwise.
The durable position is to be the thing people recommend to each other in public, because every one of these systems is ultimately trying to approximate exactly that.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about AI Overviews
Did AI Overviews reduce organic traffic?
For informational queries that can be fully answered in a summary, many sites reported meaningful declines. Queries requiring a transaction, a tool, or detailed comparison were affected less.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
There are meta directives such as nosnippet and max-snippet that limit how your content can be used in snippets, but applying them generally reduces your visibility rather than protecting it.
Why does Reddit rank above my site?
For subjective and comparative queries, Google is weighting first-hand experience and community consensus heavily. A thread of real users discussing options satisfies that intent in a way a vendor page structurally cannot.
How do I get my brand into an AI Overview?
Be cited by one of the sources it draws on. In practice that means being named favourably in the roundups and community threads that Google is already using to compose the answer.
BE IN THE SOURCE, NOT JUST THE RESULTS
If a Reddit thread answers your category's question, be in it.
MentionSpot watches Reddit and X for the buying questions in your space and ranks them by intent, so you can contribute while the thread is still forming.
